I don't get it, I just don't. What in the world is the fascination that people have with kiddie porn? The thought of it just makes me sick, much less looking at it. This seems to be a huge obsession but for the life of me I just can't understand it.

Oh the irony!
by Princess inso today i'm at the assembly at my daughter's school.
i'm a pta geek so i know all the teachers pretty well.
one of them comes and whispers "i have a j-dub kid in my class, i could use some tips as to how i can help her out".

I have been asked for advice by people that know I was raised a witness when they have to have dealings with JW's. One of my co-workers freaked out when their kid was dating a JW girl and came to me to get the whole low down.

Being raised a witness has it's benefits...
by Princess ini actually have several reasons why i don't resent my witness upbringing, but it sure came in handy today.. last year i posted about helping 50 kids run in the seattle kids marathon at my daughter's school.
the event was a blast and while it was a ton of work, seeing the joy on the kids' faces when they crossed the finish line made it all worth it.. this morning i spoke to the entire student body at my daughter's school at their monthly spirit assembly.
if i hadn't been raised a witness, giving talks from the time i was five, i never would have attempted such a thing.

I have heard this before, and understand the thinking, but I can't get past the idea that I lost a lot more than I ever gained by being raised in the borg.

"We aren't prideful, we are just giving credit to God's organization"

jw response: "nobody is attacking them personally.
it is the teachings.

I remember going with my wife to mass one time and the priest starts out with the question of why there all these different religions and denominations etc. to which I of course perked up instead of slipping into my usual semi-comatose state. He continued on that this was so because God was bigger than that, not able to be pigeonholed into a little shoebox of faith and dogma, and that we needed to quit thinking in terms of us and them, and just think in terms of us.
So it would seem this particular priest agreed with you James, the incredible shrinking God is not the way to go.

CYP, I have had that very conversation with various members of my dub family and I think you articulated the responses very well. I once read an essay by a gentleman named Tim Campbell entitled "What is True Religion" that more or less addressed this topic and gave me some food for thought. I think I found it on one of the ex-JW websites, I can e-mail it to you if you would like.

This One Is For Scholar And His Celebrated WT Scholars
by Honesty ini have some quotes from several respected bible linguists regarding the new world translation: .
dr. julius mantey - "a manual grammar of the greek new testament" calls the new world translation "a shocking mistranslation".
dr. bruce metzger, late professor of new testament at princeton university -"a frightful mistranslation", "erroneous", "pernicious", and "reprehensible".

Yeah, I have to agree, the T word is poised on my lips with regards to Scholar. But in his defense, it appears he has been around a long time, that is sort of unusual for someone looking just to yank some chains.

I had this discussion with my sister where I questioned the credentials of the folks who did the translation and she said that wasn't important and that I placed too much emphasis on secular learning. Later in the same conversation I asked her why her kids were not attending the JW school (there was one in her community at the time) and she responded, oh I'm not sending my kids there, none of the teachers have degrees. Needless to say I just sort of looked at her like this .
Never underestimate the power of denial.

The point Scholar I think is this, there is such a thing as technical proficiency and credentials. When you go to a physician Scholar, do you go to one that read Grey's anatomy once and a few books on medical science or do you go to one with diplomas on the wall that certify that the physician attended an accredited medical school, did his residency etc.?
The point is the critics of the NWT have credentials that show they have been trained in ancient languages and translation, the individuals at Bethel have none.
